William's birth certificate lists Berry Finley as father. This could be Berry Finley, husband of Amanda or it could be the son of Chesley/Chester Finley. There is a William listed in Berry's household in 1900 as a nephew who could possibly be this William. He would actually be a grandnephew. William was born in 1881. Berry, Amanda's husband, was 44 in 1881. Berry, Chesley's son, was 14. I have not been able to find a record of Mollie Madden.

Bernice Garlington confirmed that William was Berry's child 9/05 in oral conversation. She said that Berry and Amanda raised him. She does not know what happened to his mother. According to Bernice, Mae never allowed anyone to call him her half-brother. He was her brother. Mae said he would tell her stories and was very funny.
