William J. Fatherree, from Confederate Service Records: - enlisted 10 Apr 1862 in Lexington, Holmes County, MS, in Company D (Capt. Wofford's) 1st MS Light Artillery Regiment. - promoted to Corporal by Aug 62 - promoted to Sergeant by Nov 62 - present for duty Apr 62 - May 63 - Nov 62 unit stationed on Yazoo fortifications north of Vicksburg - Unit present at Battle of Baker's Creek (Champion Hill) 16 May 63, but did not see action - During seige of Vicksburg unit was part of MG John H. Forney's Division, BG John C. Moore's Brigade. Brigaded with 37th AL, 40th AL, 42ndAL, 35th MS, 40th MS, 2nd TX. Companies ACDEGI of the 1st MS Light Arty were under Forney. Company L was in a different command at Vicksburg. Companies BFK were at Port Hudson. - wounded 22 May 63 during Grant's massive attempt to break Rebel lines - died of wounds 24 May 63; probably buried in Vicksburg City Cemetery
