William received a Spanish residence permit on 23 Aug 1803 from Gov. Carlos de Grand Pré for 640 acres in West Florida, in what is now East Feliciana Parish.S2, S3 He and his family lived on and cultivated the land until 1813, when they were "forcibly driven out by lawless men" and fled to Pickneyville, in adjacent Wilkinson County, Mississippi.S3 He attempted (unsuccessfully) to reclaim his land in 1826.S4
