BIOGRAPHY: WILLIAM COLLETT was born at Melksham around 1849.He was a blacksmith and he married Sarah Hayward of Melksham around 1870 with whom he had four children during the following ten years.
BIOGRAPHY: In 1881 Sarah A Collett aged 31 of Melksham and a shoeing smith’s wife, was living at Partridges Yard in Wantage with the four children, William 8 born at Melksham, Fanny 6, Ellen 4 and Frederick 1 all born at Wantage.
BIOGRAPHY: The children’s father, William Collett aged 32 and of Melksham, was not with them on the censusday, but was in lodgings at 38 Newport Street in Swindon where he was working atthat time.
BIOGRAPHY: Sometime in the late 1880s the family moved to Gloucester where William worked at the Gloucester Wagon Works. He later set up his owncoach building company under the name Wm Collett & Sons. This was confirmed inthe 1901 Census.
BIOGRAPHY: The census records show the family living in thecity of Gloucester. William’s age was given as 51 as was Sarah’s and living with them was their son William aged 28, all three confirmed as being born at Melksham. Also still living with their parents at that time were daughter Fanny aged 26 and youngest son Frederick aged 21, both of Wantage.
BIOGRAPHY: The occupation of father William Collett was given as coach builder, while eldest son William was a coach-smith, and the youngest son Frederick was a coach painter.
