Thomasson Traces, p. 5, 13. Note that William was married in and died in Washington County, Virginia. William Byars was a Colonel in the War of 1812 and a member of the VA Legislature from Washington Co. in 1807. He was one of the founders of Emory & Henry College and one of the largest landowners in southwest Virginia. He built a 27 room home which was completed in 1830 and named Brook Hall. Col. William Byars and wife, Elizabeth, had seven children. Both are buried in Old Glade Spring Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia.
