WILLIAM BIRDSONG was born in October 1798 in Sussex County, Virginia. He moved to Christian County, Kentucky in 1800. He moved to Barren County, Kentucky before 1815. He moved to Cooper County, Missouri about 1820.

William served in the War of 1812. He enlisted at the age of 19 in Sussex County, Virginia. He served from May 27, 1814 to November 30, 1814 in the Virginia Militia at Norfork, Virginia. He received a land grant for his war service.

The 1850 census shows William living with his family in 58th District Township, Moniteau County, Missouri.

William was a charter member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, located in southeast Cooper County, Missouri.

William died during the Civil War from smallpox. He is buried in New Salem Cemetery, Moniteau County, Missouri.
