Funeral services for William S. (Billy) Atkinson, 77, of Pickens, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 25 at Pickens Methodist Church with the Rev. Skipper Maxwell officiating. Burial was in Quietridge Cemetery at Pickens, with full military honors.
Mr. Atkinson died Thursday, January 23 at Madison General Hospital in Canton following a heart attack.
A native of Holmes County, Mr. Atkinson was a combat veteran of both Pacific and European Theaters of World War II. Disabled by wounds received at Saint Lo’, Mr. Atkinson returned to Pickens to rear six children. His wife, Eliza O’Reilly Atkinson, and Mr. Atkinson were descendants of pioneer families in the Pickens area. He was educated at Holmes Junior College and the University of Mississippi where he was active in sports. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He was a member of Pickens Methodist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Richard B. Atkinson of Lexington and William E. (Bill) Atkinson of Pickens; three daughters, Ann Simmons of Columbia, Rose Anderson of Yazoo City and Grace Buchanan of Jackson; one brother, E. W. Atkinson of Memphis, Tennessee; three sisters, Mary Margaret Tobin of Toledo, Ohio, Ada Jo Stubbs of Pickens and Bess Atkinson of Jackson; and 15 grandchildren.
