    Notes for William ALLEN:
According to the 1978 Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin which contains excerpts from the Allen-Raymond Bible: "William Allen, son of Robert & Hannah Allen, of Wexford in the Kingdom of Ireland, born on the 3rd November 1769. Sailed from Cork the 23 August 1794, and landed in Philadelphia the 19the of the October following.

Also recorded in this source were the births of William's children, some of their deaths and the marriage of his youngest daughter, Mary Louisa Fell to Samuel W. Raymond. Mary's children were included.

There are quite a number of transations involving William which show up in the land records at the Maryland State Archives, including one in 1796 where James Berard sold to William Allen, merchant, five horses (including one which was blind in one eye) and a wagon.

Although most of William's children were baptized in Havre de Grace as late as 1817, he is believed to have lived in Abingdon as early as Feb 1798 when he bought land at a public auction. This land was supposed to be on the NW corner of Paca and Prospect Streets, fronting Paca Street. He also sold some land in 1800 to his brother Ebenezer for a $1000. A land deed available at the Maryland State Archives indicates that William and Ebenezer gave land and buildings in Abingdon to the state as a school, the Abington Academy. However, this academy may have been
inaugorated under another name since as there is a memorial in Cokesbury Meth. Cemetery to a similar, short-lived school in Abingdon. (Harford Co. Deeds, WK 813-2)

William's monumental inscription reads: "native of Wexford, Ireland, lived in Harford Co. 60 years, member of M.E. Church. Died Aug. 19, 1860-91st year."

Possible descendants who are also buried in Cokesbury include "Doc" Herbert D. Allen, a horse trainer and conditioner who lived at Joppa, Abingdon, owned "Allen's Cabin Town" on Rt. 40 and died Jul 30, 1960; also Herbert's son James H. Allen who died May 7,1930, age 68.
