Virgil Allen's unpublished papers say that William and Jane had nine children but that he knows nothing about them.

William and Jane were found in the 1850 Census, Illinois, Logan District: William M. Allen 45 M Farmer 2000 NJ Jane S. 43 F OH Eamine? 20 F OH Mary E. 16 F OH Emily M. 14 F OH Isaac N. 12 M OH William H. 9 M IL Myrtis C. 2 F IL

On the 1860 Census, Illinois the family was listed in Logan District, Mount Pulaski. The girls are not listed; only William and Isaac are at home with their parents. There is also a John Baxter, age 35 living with them and his two children, M. J. female, age 13; and Eva S., female age 9. I don't know what relationship the Baxters have with William and Jane.

From Cheryl Kale:

William M. Allen moved to Knox Co., Ohio at the age of nine. he lived with his first wife for some years on a part of the farm in Ohio which his father gave him from his own holdings there. In October 1839, he removed to Logan Co., Illinois wiht his family. An account in the 1878 Hist. of Logan Co. (p. 405) states that the trip was made in wagons and consumed 18 days. He bought a farm in Logan Co. of 100 acres for which he paid $6 per acre; he added to this 100 acres by land warrant at 71 per acre; later he purchased another 40 acres by land warrant sale for $70. He stated that there were just two families in Mt. Pulaski, Logan Co., Illinois when he came there. He was a Republican and Uni.

William Mitchell was named for a brother of his grandmother Jackson.
