OBITUARY: Traverse City Record Eagle Ward L. Knight Died June 15, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Ward L. Knight, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday. Born June 11, 1912, in Paradise Township, he was the son of Eugene T. and Lulu (Pierce) Knight. On June 10, 1939,in Kingsley, he married the former Margaret E. Sattem. Ward lived in the Kingsley area most of his life. A farmer, he was also a manager of The Kingsley Co-Op. In his retirement years he worked at a convenience store. Ward was a veteran of World War II; he served in the Army Infantry and participated in Patton's march across Germany. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 383 and the VFW Post No. 2780. Ward enjoyed a lifelong love of poetry and upon request he could share a poem to fit any occasion. Over his lifetime he had committed dozens of poems to memory, even into old age. He also enjoyed playing cards at the Eagles with his friends. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Knight of Swartz Creek and Jean (DuWayne) Weaver of Traverse City; five sisters, Marion Maxon of Kingsley, Ruth Moyer of Buckley, Bernice (Chet) Seel of Traverse City, Betty (Phil) Bowden of Kingsley and Jeanne (Bob) Kyselka of Traverse City; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Lulu; wife, Margaret, in 1990; four brothers, Lucius, Ellis, Cyril and Colon; and two sisters, Hazel and Winnifred. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor William Smith, grandson of Ward, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Veteran's Memorial Fund.
