Facts and Events
1901 UK Census; Not found In a 14 January, 2002, letter Barb Smith writes: "My grandfather, Walter Charles Western (born July 25, 1881) was an interesting man. He was overheard by a wealthy man preaching on a London street corner. The gentleman thought he had potential and paid for him to go to ecumenical college in Glasgow. ... My grandfather married [the wealthy man's] daughter (we do not know her name), but she died within the year. My grandfather emigrated to Canada soon after February 23, 1909, because I have a copy of the complete works of Shakespeare presented to him by the Picadilly Mission in Glasgow on the eve of his departure. In Saskatchewan he met and married my grandmother, Ethel Davis. He also at the time switched from Presbyterian to the Anglican faith. He had parishes in a number of small towns on the Prairies, Pelly (Saskatchewan), Medicine Hat (Alberta), and Moose Jaw (Saskatchewan). He also had a keen interest in drama and for a time had his own radio drama show, in addition to his religious duties. My father [Maurice] remembers that they once hosted Roald Amundson at dinner when he was on a speaking tour of North America. At that time the local clergyman would host any visiting dignitaries to the small prairie towns. My grandfather had parishes in Esquimalt, BC and Nanaimo, BC, during the war and in Saanich, BC near Victoria after the war. He became an Archdeacon and is buried in the churchyard at St. Stephen's in Saanich. It is the oldest Anglican Church in BC still holding regular services and is a beautiful little white clapboard church, set in the hills overlooking Brentwood Bay and is surrounded by trees with hanging Spanish moss."
