Walter J. Latimer, 79, started soft ball league

Walter J. Latimer, 79, 318 Fairdale N.E., died of cancer at 1:30 a.m. Saturday at his home.
He was born April 11, 1904, in Warren, the son of James E. and Gertrude Mae Glancy Latimer.
Mr. Latimer was co-owner of Willowbrook Dairy until 1950 and then worked for Daniel Motor Freight as a dock foreman for 19 years. He also drove a school bus for Howland Schools for 20 years.
He was a member of First Assembly of God. An avid sports fan, he organized the original soft ball league in Warren. Mr. Latimer is survived by his wife, the former Pearl Shevel, whom he married Sept. 23, 1927; two sons, Walter J. Latimer Jr. of Champion, and Barry H. Latimer of Bullhead City, Ariz; five daughters, Mrs. Sheldon (Martha) Shilliday of Parker, Ariz., Mrs. Gary (Marian) Christopherson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mrs. Raymond (Judy) Smith of Harrah, Okla., Mrs. Raymond (Joan) Marsh of Hollywood, Fla., and Mrs. Bart (Patricia) Anthony of Cortland, Ohio: one sister, Mrs. Agnes Gilligan of Southington, Ohio; and 23 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. A son, Thomas Richard, and a brother, Carl Latimer, preceded him in death. His son-in-law, Rev. Gary Christopherson, will help officiate at the funeral, which will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Crown Hill Burial Park.
