Facts and Events
Richard Vernon, or "Vernie" as he was called, was born 1 month after his grandfather, Richard William, died and was named after him. At that time the family was living a short distance north (?) of the Jackson Cemetery where Richard Vernon, Vernie, Clarence, John, and, I believe, Bob are buried. Richard Vernon lived to be only 3 years old, and died of diphtheria. His brother, Clarence, then only 9 years old, wanted to make him a tombstone. So the shaft you see marking the grave was carefully sanded and shaped by a 9 year old boy as he grieved for his little brother. I assume that Grandpa Will chiseled in the initials and dates. There is a sequel to that story. Just 5 years later, Clarence was also laid to rest beside the stone h had carved for his brother, a victim of typhoid. His initials and dates are carved on another side of the stone. References
