There are four Thomas' listed in a reconstructed census for Hardin County KY for the year 1800. I suspect that one of these Thomas' was the father of Joseph J. Thomas. They were Hardin, Harry, John and Joseph (Sr.?). The reconstructed Census is found in a book at the Carlsbad Library called "Two Centuries in Elizabethtown and Hardin County Kentucky 1776-1976", on page 11-112 (GEN 976.9845 K2 mac C.1).
From 1775 to Kentucky statehood in 1792, the area which is now the state of Kentucky was called "Kentucky County, Virginia". Any individual recorded as being born in Virginia during this period may have actually been born in what is now Kentucky (or many other latter day states also).
