Bedford County contributed men to the Pennsylvania Regiments of the Continental Line beginning in 1775 when Colonel William Thompson was commissioned to raise a battalion of riflemen. The companies which were enlisted in 1775 and 1776 remained in effect through the war, therefore multiple rosters of those companies have been correlated to produce the list below. The companies enlisted under Captain Richard Brown and Captain Robert Cluggage were distinct entities and comprised almost entirely of men from Mother Bedford. Those raised for other regiments, such as the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment, were composed of men from both Bedford and Westmoreland Counties, and the names are not annotated as to their place of origin. Therefore, some individuals might have been inadvertently missed.
