Contradictions in the records need to be resolved. The birth date on the grave marker could easily be explained as a transcription error (for 1825), a not uncommon occurrence. The conflicting information about his death, however, needs further research. Military service records (both derivative) are consistent with the gravestone information (also derivative), and census records do not suggest another Thomas or Thompson Zahniser living in Mercer County of an age to have enlisted in the military. Is there an error in the transcription of the records that say he mustered out in 1865,[5] or did he simply disappear from his family for other reasons?[1]
