    THOMAS H. WOODY.
Thomas Woody was one of the first residents of Tuscola. He occupied the first house ever built in the town, which stood on the southeast corner of Block 24, just eastof the present post office. In company with Mr. Wallace and his wife, he founded the Methodist Church, the first religious society every organized in Tuscola. The Woody family was of English descent. Mr. Woody's grandfather, John Woody, settled in Baltimore, and began the publication there of the Baltimore American, now one of the oldest papers in America. The family subsequently moved to North Carolina, and here Thomas H. Woody was born on the seventeenth of February, 1804. He was a blacksmith by trade. In 1826 he came to Parke county, Indiana, and in 1828 was married to Eleanor Maris. In 1827 he began flat-boating out of the Wabash to New Orleans, and followed this for nearly forty years. He removed to Illinois in 1857, first locating north of Tuscola, and taking part in the founding of the town as stated above.
