Thomas S. Tuttle was born in Virginia or Kentucky according to his children's census records. Internet pages list his birth date as 30 Oct 1787 in Fairfax County, Virginia to William Simpson Tuttle and Jane Stapleton, but original sources need to be found for this data.

By 1814 Thomas had moved to Kentucky, where he married Ann/Hannah Haydon on 4 Jan 1814 in Clark County (sources needed). Ann bore Thomas two sons, Samuel Robert b. 20 Sep 1814, and William George b. 15 Nov 1815, before she died on 16 May 1816 in Madison county, Kentucky.

It didn't take Thomas long to remarry, as he was wed to Nancy Thomas on 2 Jan 1817 in Clark County, Kentucky. Their first son John Gilpin was born 7 Oct 1817 in Madison county, Kentucky, named after Thomas' brother Gilpin Stapleton Tuttle. Thomas and Nancy's first daughter Martha Ann was born about 1821 in Missouri (according to her 1850 and 1860 census records). This means that the family moved from Kentucky to Missouri (probably Boone County) some time between 1817 and 1821. No census record has been found for Thomas before 1840, but as the census returns only recorded the head of the household there is every chance he and his family were living in the household of cousins or friends in Missouri.

James H. Tuttle was born to the couple in August 1822 in Missouri; followed by Thomas Dydemus Tuttle born 7 Jun 1826; Warren W. Tuttle on 10 Sep 1833 and Mary F. Tuttle on 14 Sep 1835, all in Boone County. A biography of Warren W. Tuttle written in 1884 says the family moved to Callaway County around 1837.

Thomas appears in the 1840 census in Cote Sans Dessein, with a household count that indicates that Nancy and their children James, Thomas, Warren, and Mary were living with him, with elder children John and Martha Ann having left home. John may have married Orlinda Hunt in Polk, MO; Martha Ann had married William G. Monroe and had her first child.

The biography of Warren Tuttle states that Thomas was a farmer and a merchant, and that son Warren later formed a company to build a tobacco warehouse in Fulton. It is reasonable to assume that Thomas brought a tradition of growing tobacco with him from Kentucky to Missouri, along with the slaveholding traditions that went with tobacco cultivation in the southern states. In any case, by the 1840 census he had 10 slaves living with him, including both men and women and 5 children under 10.

Thomas' probate records deal with the distribution of twenty-two slaves among his five living children. Slaves were usually the most valuable kind of property, and the inventory included in his probate records also hint that Thomas was pretty well-off. He died on 9 October 1843 and his property passed to his wife Nancy. She died on 27 Dec 1858 and the family property was soon under dispute among the Tuttle children.

Research notes

Original sources are needed for this person - at this stage the only contemporary records found by the author are Thomas' 1840 census record and the records for the settlement of his estate. So most of the above is as they say "mythology".

Land records from Boone County in the 1820s or 1830s would support the theory that this is where the family were living when most of the children were born. Land records for Callaway County would also show when the family first moved to that area. Land records are available at the State Archives in Jefferson City, MO, and a search of the land patents index shows a few records of interest for a Thomas S. Tuttle.
