Thomas Swinton's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when he died was correct then he was born around 1733. Thomas's first confirmed sighting is on 8th June 1772, when he married Mary Allen at Kirkby la Thorpe in Lincolnshire. They had at least three children born in the late 1770s, although none of them were baptised as babies.

Mary died in 1780, aged 37. A note on her burial describes her as "wife of Thomas Swinton commonly so called a Dissenter".

Thomas died less than five years later, being buried at Kirkby la Thorpe on 11th July 1785. He was said to be 52 years old. His three children were all baptised on the same day in 1787, a couple of years after Thomas's death.
