According to a family story, he left New Jersey with other neighbors or friends, circa 1799, for Ohio. He left his watch with his wife, Margaret. He made it as far as Fort Pitt where he was persuaded to trade his horse for a skiff. He was never heard from again but years later his name was said to have been found carved on a tree along the banks of the Ohio River in Kentucky.
