Tom homesteaded in the Black Hills in his twenties, before getting married. He had contact with Native people (Lakota Sioux) in the area and competed with them in foot-races, often winning (by family report).

1913 Land Patent: Full payment made for the homestead in the Black Hills of South Dakota. 160 acres: E half fo the NE quarter section of section 20 and the N half fo the NW quarter of section 21 in Township 10 S of Range 9 E of the Black Hills Meridian. Patent Number 323919.
