BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR THE THOMAS A. PATTERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Mr Thomas A. Patterson, Jr (1949) established this scholarship to honor his father.

Thomas A. Patterson was born and raised in Meadville and graduated from Meadville High School. He attended Allegheny for one semester before transferring to Penn State University. He was an honor graduate with a BS degree in Electro-Chemical Engineering in the class of 1913. Mr Patterson was a true entrprenour. He financed his education by working as a traveling photographer during the summer months and also during the school year he would take photos of sporting events. For example: he would take photos during the first half of a football game, go back to his room to develop and print the photos and then return to the stadium to sell the pictures to the fans at the conclusion of the game.

After graduation he worked for a number of Chemical companies designing and operating plants producing Chlorine and Caustic Soda. During World War I he was assigned by the War Department as an engineer at the Muscle Shoals Armory. After the War he took a position as manager of the Bell Alkali facility in Bell West Virginia. In 1928 he moved to Cleveland, Ohio and started his own company, The T. A. Patterson Laboratories to manufacture chemical supplies for the Laundry, Dry Cleaning, and Photo Engraving businesses. He eventually expanded this business to include plants in Niagara Falls, NY; Detroit, MI and Indianapolis, IN. During World War II he developed a process to manufacture Titanium Tetrachloride ("Smoke Gas") used by the Navy PT boats.
