1813 - Bastardy order against Thomas Noble at Bressingham: The order of Thomas Jenkinson Woodward Esq. and the Rev. George Bett.....Clerk....two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, one whereof is the Quorum, and both residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church within the Parish of Bressingham in the said County of Norfolk made the Twelfth Day of April in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirteen concerning a male Bastard Child lately born in the Parish of Bressingham aforesaid, of the body of Mary Downing Single Woman. Whereas it hath appeared unto us the said Justices, as well upon the complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Bressingham as upon the oath of the said Mary Downing that she the said Mary Downing on the twelfth Day of March now last past was delivered a male Bastard Child in the said Parish of Bressingham in the said County, and that the said male bastard Child is likely to become chargeable to the said Parish of Bressingham and further that Thomas Noble of the Parish of Brockdish in the said County of Norfolk, labourer, did beget the said Bastard Child on the body of her the said Mary Downing And whereas the said Thomas Noble hath this day voluntarily appeared before us the said Justices, but hath not shewd any Sufficient Cause why the said Thomas Noble shall not be the reputed father of the said Bastard Child. We therefore upon examination of the cause and circumstances of the premises, as well as upon the oath of the said Mary Downing as otherwise, do hereby adjudge him the said Thomas Noble to be the reputed father of the said Bastard Child and do also adjudge that the said male Bastard Child was born in the Parish of Bressingham. And therefore we do order, as well for the better relief of the said Parish of Bressingham as for the sustentation and relief of the said Bastard Child, that the said Thomas Noble shall and do forthwith upon notice of this our Order pay or cause to be paid to the said Parish of Bressingham or to some or one of them, the sum of Two Shillings for and towards the lying in of the said Mary Downing and the maintenance of the said Bastard Child to the time of making this our Order. And also the sum of Six Shillings for the reasonable costs of apprehending and securing the said Thomas Noble and for the payment of the costs of this our Order of filiation. And we also hereby further order, that the said Thomas Noble shall likewise pay, or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the said Parish of Bressingham for the time being, or to some or one of them, the sum of Two Shillings weekly and every week, from the present time, for and towards Sustentation and Maintenance of the said Bastard Child, for and during so long time as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Bressingham and we further order that the said Mary Downing shall also pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Bressingham for the time being, or to some or one of them, the sum of Sixpence weekly and every week, so long as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the Parish of Bressingham in case she shall not nurse or take care of the Child herself.
