Facts and Events
Name Thomas Lewis
Alt Name Tommy Lewis
Gender Male
Birth[1] Abt 1877 London, England
Census[1] 3 Apr 1881 Luton, Bedfordshire, England41 Brache Street

Thomas or Tommy Lewis's exact date and place of birth have yet to be established. His only confirmed sighting is in the 1881 census when he was living in Luton, Bedfordshire with his parents Eleanor Lewis, formerly Beeson, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a pedlar. He was said to be three years old and born in London. He was still alive in 1883 when he was claimed to be the victim of an assault, although his parents and the defendant agreed to withdraw the case before it came to court.

Thomas has yet to be traced after 1883. It is worth noting that his parents separated shortly afterwards, each living with others from at least 1885 onwards. Thomas's father had another son called Thomas in 1885, which may imply that this Thomas had died, although no obvious death record has been found for him.

The only death of a Thomas / Tommy Lewis of about the right age between 1881 and 1885 appears to be this one:

However, his death certificate shows that he was the son of Thomas Hugh Lewis, stone mason. That family can be found living in the 1881 census in the Pimlico area of Westminster.

BOROUGH SESSIONS.-The only case before the Bench on Saturday last that did not seem to be connected with the Salvation Army proceedings was a summons against Arthur Dell, labourer, of Langley-street, Luton, for assaulting a little boy named Thomas Lewis. There was a cross-summons, charging Thomas Lewis and Ellen Lewis, the parents of the child, living in Brache-street Luton, with using abusive language towards Dell. Mr. Ewen appeared for the Lewises, and before the case was heard it was agreed between the parties to withdraw the summonses, each party paying the other's costs.
