Thomas was sued for damages by a fellow farmer named Arnold from Lamberhurst in the Supreme Court of Judicature on 8 December 1877. This was probably the Arthur Arnold who was listed in the 1871 census as an unmarried farmer living at Mill Place in Lamberhurst with his sister and niece.

The grievance arose from an alleged assault at a cricket match in Lamberhurst in July 1876. Mr Lansdell called Mr Arnold a "counterfeit" and Mr Arnold then made "satirical allusions to the defendant's method of farming". He also accused Mr Lansdell "of having acted dishonourably in not playing in a cricket-match a short time previously" and "touched on a domestic matter nearly affecting the defendant". A "sharp skirmish ensued" but Mr Lansdell explained that he had only "tapped the plaintiff on his hat, which caused it to fall over his eyes, and had shaken his fist at him". He paid £1 into court as compensation for the plaintiff and the jury found in Mr Lansdell's favour.
