Thomas King was baptised on 11th November 1838 at Caddington in Bedfordshire, son of a straw plaiter called Susan King, formerly Dean, and her husband James King, an agricultural labourer. At the time of Thomas's baptism the family lived at Tipple Hill, a lane in the Aley Green area of Caddington, in the part of the parish which at that time was in Hertfordshire. The 1841 census finds Thomas living with his parents, siblings and paternal grandmother at Aley Green.
By the time of the 1851 census, when Thomas was twelve years old, he had left home and was working as a farm labourer at a nearby farm.
On 13th January 1859, aged twenty, Thomas married Susan Munn at Caddington. They went on to have four children together between 1859 and 1866. The 1861 census finds them living in Caddington, with Thomas working as an agricultural labourer and Susan working as a bonnet sewer.
Susan and Thomas's second child died in 1865, aged three. Thomas's mother died later that same year.
Susan died in 1866, either giving birth to her fourth child, a boy called Thomas, or shortly afterwards; his birth and her death were both registered in the April to June quarter of that year. She was 28 years old. Baby Thomas did not long outlive his mother, dying in the September.
The 1871 census finds Thomas and his two surviving daughters living with Thomas's father at Aley Green.
On 11th November 1876, aged 38, Thomas married again. His second wife was Sarah Sharp, a bonnet sewer, and they married at Caddington. She had a two year old daughter to whom Thomas became stepfather. After their marriage Thomas and Sarah went on to have another six children between 1877 and 1887.
The 1881 and 1891 censuses both find Sarah, Thomas and their children living at Aley Green in the Hertfordshire part of Caddington.
Sarah died in 1892, aged 47, leaving Thomas a widower for a second time at the age of 53. His youngest daughter was only four years old when her mother died.
Thomas's father died in 1895. Thomas was present at the death and acted as informant.
Some time between 1895 and 1901 Thomas left Caddington and moved to the nearby town of Luton. The 1901 census finds him living at 202 Wellington Street there with his children. In Luton he worked as a horse keeper.
Thomas died on 15th September 1910 at Wellington Street in Luton, aged 71.
