Fitch, Thomas. Clerk, Norwalk Train Band, Feb. 1657; Ens., May 1665; Capt., Fairfield County Troop, Aug. 1673, and Feb. 1676 (K. Philip's War); Commissioner for Norwalk, 1669-87, 1689-94, and for Danbury, 1686-87, 1689-90; Deputy (Norwalk), May 1673. Eldest son of Thomas and Anna (Reeve) Fitch of Bocking, co. Essex, Eng., b. abt. 1612, d. at Norwalk in 1704; m. at Bocking, 1 Nov. 1632, Anna Stacey. He was instrumental in bringing other members of his family to New England; among his bros. were Rev. James of Norwich, Samuel the Hartford school master, and Capt. Joseph. The latter was with him in Norwalk, but finally settled in Windsor. Will 6 Oct. 1696; gr. son Thomas Fitch; two gr. sons John and Nathaniel Fitch; dau. Ann now wife of John Thompson of Farmington; dau. Mary now wife of Capt. Matthew Sherwood; son John and John's wife; son Capt. Matthew Sherwood and cousin Sergt. John Platt, overseers; mentioned his great expense in the civil wars in England, and the transportation of himself and family. Inv. 14 Apr. 1704. John Fitch as Exec'r engaged to give to the children of his dec'd sister Burr the same amount which his other sisters had by will. Richard Lyon of Fairfield gave by will 1678 £7 to his "cousin" Mary Fitch. She is usually supposed to be the dau. of Thomas; but since that Mary must have m. several years before that date, we cannot agree. Thomas Fitch, Jr., had a dau. Mary, b. abt. 1668, but it is not clear how she could have been related to Lyon. The John Platt called "cousin" by Thomas Fitch was husband of a sister of the wife of Thomas Fitch, Jr.
