Facts and Events
Thomas was taxed in Beekman from 1757 through 1778. He was taxed at £3 in June 1758, £4 from June 1763 through June 1775 and £3 in 1778. He was a customer at the Sleight store in Beekman ca. 1767 on and Benjamin Bump was on his account. [DCSB B:42, 60, 63, 68, 69, 72, 105, 132 & 180 (Bump)].He was accused of being a loyalist at the Congressional meeting of Thursday 15 May 1777. Benjamin Buffington swore; "...there are several persons in that part of the Country, who were privy & knowing to the party's going off, Vizt ...Joshua Burdick Jr., Thomas Cornell, Solomon Beach, & the sons of Benjamin Deuel. ..That the second meeting was at the Hay Stack (in field of Elkanah Briggs, qv;) above mentioned, when Robert Burdick Sen., Solomon Beach, & Thomas Cornwell were present." The ConC ordered that Col. Morehouse cause to be apprehended a number of men, including Thomas Cornell, and that theybe immediately sent to the Committee. [ConC 289-90].Thomas Cornell had signed the Association in Beekman and later was granted Land Bounty Rights for service in the l5th Reg.He died 1797 [See DAR, but note that DAR II:45 errs in stating that he m. Elizabeth Wiltsie]. He was a path master in Beekman in 1773, 80, 82, and 90. In 1790 he was listed as 2-1-2 and was next to Ambrose Hunt and Peter Lossing. Thomas Cornwell Jr. wrote his will 7 May 1796 and it was probated 25 Feb. 1797. He mentioned son William and daus. Hannah, Elizabeth, Anna and Sally. He also mentioned son-in-law John Brill and nephew Thomas Cornell. witnesses were Nicholas, Peter and John Lossing. Executors were William Cornell, Thomas Cornell and John Brill.
