Facts and Events
Thomas Buckner appears to have moved to Halifax Co. VA by around 1784 and raised a family there. He was still in Orange Co. in 1776, when he witnessed a deed by his mother. Circumstantial evidence from tax records suggests that his wife was named Rachel and that he had three sons, Thomas, Aylett (often spelled "Ellett" or "Elliott"), and Phillip. He resided at various points on the plantations of Isaac Coles and George Carrington. Several of his descendants were blacksmiths, so that may have been his profession. It is notable his sister Ann Conner's son, Catlett Conner, was a well known blacksmith (and legislator) in South Carolina. His inheritance in the wills of his father and mother was quite limited, and from Halifax tax records it appears that his wealth was correspondingly modest. References
