No Issue Dallas County, Dexter, Iowa Will Records Box A-8, Case 3789 WILL I, Sylvia Samantha Aten of Dexter, Dallas County, State of Iowa, being of lawful age and of sound and predisposing mind do make, declare and publish this to be my last Will and testament hereby revolking any and all other Wills by me having been made. 1. It will be the duty of my Executor hereinafter named to pay all my just debts including my last sickness and funeral expenses and the cost of this administration out of any moneys coming into his hands. 2. It is my wish that a headstone be used at my grave location on the James Bishop Lot in Knoxville, Iowa, Cemetery, at not to exceed a valuation of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00). 3. I hereby authorize my executor hereinafter named, to sell and convey by good and sufficient title any real estate of which I may die, seized at as early a date as possible without sacrificing on the valuation. The object being to convert said real estate into money for the purpose of settling this estate. 4. I hereby make the following equests to the heirs of my deceased brother, Calvin H. Bishop to wit; I hereby give and bequeath to Mrs. Gynetha Houston, Steelville, Mo. the sum of One Hundred Fifty Dollars to be her own absolutely. I hereby give and bequeath to Mrs. Callie Johnson of ElPaso, Texas the sum of One Hundred Fifty Dollars to be her own absolutely. I also give and bequeath to Mrs. Jennie Bishop of Trask, Mo., the surviving widow of Calvin H. Bishop, deceased, the sum of Two Hundred Thirty-three and 34/100 Dollars, to be her own absolutely and I give and bequeath to Gladys Bishop of Trask, Mo. the sum of Two Hundred Thirty-three and 33/100 Dollars to be her own absolutely. I also give and bequeath to Fred Bishop, Trask, Mo., the sum of Two Hundred Thirty-three and 33/100 Dollars when he has reached the age of eighteen years, the same to be his own absolutely. 5. I hereby make the following bequests to the heirs of my deceased brother Abijah Wines Bishop to wit; I give and bequeath to Mrs. Lillie Esteb of Kingston, Mo., the sum of Four Hundred Dollars to be her own absolutely. I give and bequeath to Albert Bishop, St. Joe, Mo., the sum of Two Hundred Dollars to be his own absolutely. I give and bequeath to Chester Bishop of Kingston, Mo., the sum of Two Hundred Dollars to be his own absolutely. I give and bequeath to Charles E. Bishop of Kingston, Mo. the sum of Two Hundred Dollars to be his own absolutely. 6. I hereby make the following bequests to the heirs of my deceased brother John Q. I hereby give and bequeath to Parsons College, Fairfield, Iowa, the sum of Fifty Dollars, to be their own absolutely. 8. I hereby give and bequeath to the Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church of Dexter, Iowa, the sum of Fifty Dollars to be their own absolutely. 9. I hereby give and bequeath to the Woman's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church of Dexter, Iowa, the sum of Fifty Dollars to be their own absolutely, of which Twenty-five Dollars shall be used for the Women's Home Missionary Society and Twenty-five Dollars shall be used for the Women's Foreign Missionary Soceity. 10. I hereby give and bequeath to the Presbyterian Church of Dexter, Iowa, the sum of Three Hundred Dollars to be their own absolutely. 11. I hold in my name real estate mortgage given by John Robertson and wife for Thirty- five Hundred Dollars, dated February 26, 1920, and due March 1st, 1925, upon the North-east Quarter (NE 1/4) of the North-east Quarter (NE 1/4) of Section Eleven (11) Township seventy-seven (77) North, Range Thirty (30), West of the Fifth P.M. Adair County, Iowa, Twenty-eight Hundred Dollars of this sum belong to me and the remainder or Seven Hundred Dollars belongs to and was contributed by Carrie Carrothers. It is my wish that the interest from my part of this said loan, together with any rents upon real estate shall be paid to Mrs. Jennie Bishop, surviving widow of Calvin H. Bishop, for the support of herself and two chidlren until said property has been duly disposed of, because of the crippled condition of the widow and the financial condition of the family, it is my wish that these payments be made monthly to them or as fast as received by my said Executor. 12. Any other funds remaining in the hands of my said Executor after the above bequests have been duly paid, I give and bequeath to Gladys Bishop and Fred Bishop, children of my deceased brother, Calvin H. Bishop, of Trask, Mo.,share and share alike. 13. I hereby nominate and request that the Court appoint F.H. Fitting, Dexter, Iowa, Executor of this my last Will. Done at Dexter, Iowa, the day and date last above written. Nellie E. Neal Carrie Carrothers Knoxville Journal, Knoxville, Iowa September 2, 1920 MRS. SAMANTHA ATEN. Mrs. Samantha Aten died at Dexter, Sunday, August 15, 1920, aged 77 years. The deceased was born Aug. 15, 1843, in Albany, Ohio, and moved to western Ohio when eight years of age. After residing there four years, she came to Knoxville and later to Dexter. On April 11, 1867, the deceased was united in marriage to Levi Aten. Until two months ago she enjoyed good health. Mrs. Aten's nearest living relatives are nieces and nephews, the Bishop family, of this city. The body was brought to Knoxville and services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Presbyterian church conducted by Rev. Bethel, of Hartford. Interment was made in Graceland cemetery. By Beulah Charline (Anthony) Wilson, #7327 Date Unknown James Bishop father of John Quincy Bishop died June 3, 1880. Aged 69 yrs. 5 mo. 7 ds. Silvia Bishop (his wife and mother of John Quincy Bishop) died April 22, 1899. AgeD 85 yrs. and 1 da. Their daughter Samantha S. Bishop was born 1843 - died 1920. She married Levi Aten. However, they separated. She was a beloved aunt by all the John Quincy Bishop family. She died at Dexter, Iowa in 1920. Funeral was held in Knoxville, Iowa and burial in the Knoxville Cemetery. Death caused by string cancer which tied its self around the intestine just below the stomach. (I saw the X-rays) Her estate was to be divided among the John Q. Bishop (children?) but a banker in Dexter made way with all but about $100 each.
