MILITARY: Abraham Lincoln Papers at the Library of Congress. Transcribed and Annotated by the Lincoln Studies Center, Knox College. Galesburg,Illinois.

In January of 1862, Mrs. Sylvester R. Knight wrote to President Lincoln concerning the release of her husband from jail in Richmond, Virginia. This a transcription of the endorsment he wrote on a the letter from Mrs. Knight, which was presumably returned . The president's private secretary, John G. Nicolay, has written an explanation of the memorandum just below Lincoln's copy; "Endorsed upon the letter of a lady who wished her husband released from jail at Richmond where he is held prisoner of war. Lt. S.R. Knight 1st R.I. Regt." Notwithstanding the president's discourageing tone, Lieutenant Knight was exchanged and mustered out of the army in January of 1862.

The President sympathizes deeply with Mrs. Knight & her husband, and the many others in like condition--but he is sure she does not appreciate the difficulty of what she asks--
