Examiniation of the register of the parish of St. Paul's, Canterbury, clearly shows a baptismal entry for "Susan Furner the 5th daye" of November 1573. The same register shows, in a beautiful hand, the baptism of the Chilton's first child, Isabella: "Isabell the daughter of James Chilton the 15th daye January" 1586. Allowing for a nine-month pregnancy and conception soon after marriage, the Chiltons might have been married about April 1586 Old Style. Given these assumptions, Susannah Furner would have been only about 12 1/2 years at marriage. James Chilton, born about 1556, would have been about about 29. Such a match would be unlikely, and Susannah may have been young to give birth to Isabell.
