Mrs. Susanna Fowles, nee Laughner, was born in Hempfield township, Westmoreland Co., Pa., October 16, 1814, and died April 16, 1904.

She came to Clarion county with her mother, sisters and brothers in 1819. She married Reuben Fowles early in 1831. Her husband died August 19, 1880. She had ten children.

Four daughters and three sons survive, viz: Mrs. Amanda J. Bailey of Emlenton, Mrs. Martha M. Thomas of Blairs Comers, Mrs. Lizzie E. Rugh of Lamartine, Mrs. Sallie Taylor of Blairs Corners, R. M. Fowles of Canonsburg, Pa., W.B. Fowler [sic] of North Baltimore, Ohio, and A.A. Fowles of Blairs Corners. Thirty grandchildren and twenty-five great grand children survive her.

In her early youth she united with the American Reformed Church under the pastorate of Rev. Henry Cook, at St. Paul's in Beaver township, Clarion county. She was a most devoted and faithful Christian. In her home all ministers of her Lord found welcome. She gave food, shelter and rest to the weary itinerant, the casual stranger was cheerfully invited to her board and the poor never went away empty-handed. Many lips have called her blessed as she cast her bread upon the waters, who, now that she has passed within the white veil, will scatter lilies on her grave.

Her first born, Erred Fowles, gave his life for his country at Antietam and another, W.B. Fowles, served during the war and was in the advance guard within whose lines Gen. Grant received the surrender of Gen. Lee at Appomattox.

The obsequies were held at the home where she reared her children and spent her last days, cared for by the tender ministry of Mrs. Taylor and her brother A.A. Fowles. Her body was interred by the side of her husband in Mt. Joy Cemetery, April 19, 1904. Services were conducted by Rev. Kerschner, of St. Petersburg and Rev. Todd of Lamartine.
