Facts and Events
ONE OF THE VERY FIRST SETTLERS IN KALAMAZOO COUNTY IN PRAIRIE RONDE TWP WITH HUSBAND CHRISTOPHER BAIR Biography: Christopher Bair married Susanna Baum about 1793-94 in York County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were French and their name was originally La Baum. Fourteen children were born to Christpher and Susanna. They went to Ohio about 1805 when land was opened for colonization. In Nov. 1828 they moved to Michigan Territory in a covered wagon, taking twenty-two days to reach White Pigeon. They spent the winter there. On Mar. 6, 1829, they moved to Prairie Ronde. They made the third entry of land in Kalamazoo County. Christopher died after only four years in Prairie Ronde. His wife, Susanna, lived on for many years in their home, even after all the children had married and gone into houses of their own. Hers had been a life of privation and hardship, devoted to her family. She bore fourteen children and thirteen of them grew to maturity; a family to be proud of and honored as good loyal citizens and sturdy pioneers. She died of old age in 1849. Buried in Harrison Cemetery. ["getkarie" originally shared this to Wallace Family Tree] References
