Per Arvil Hampton, his Grandpa used to take him along on trips to the "timber camps". Grandpa would take fresh vegetables and milk and butter to the "timber camps" in McCurtain County during the 1920"s. At this time in the southeastern Oklahoma the roads were still dirt and travel was done by horse and wagon most of the time. Since Grandpa's round trip took him all day, Arvil would get to go along for the company and to help out once in a while. During the rides, Grandpa would tell stories to Arvil about his younger life. One of the thing he said was that his father called his wife his Creek Princess. It seems that Arvil's great-grandma really was of Creek Indian ancestry. All we have is the stories that Stephen Shelby told and he can't remember any details. We have been unable so far of tracing any of Martha's family. Family tradition says that Martha did not have to go to the reservation because she was married to a white man.
