Stephen Scovell, Jr. resided in the East Haddam part of Hadlyme Parish on land which his father had given him. His will, dated April 13, 1778, was proved at Colchester March 7,1780 and is paraphrased here


To his wife Rebecca he left the use and improvement of all his property, both real and personal, "as long as she remains my widow", and to each of his children one shilling. To son Samuel Scovell ten shillings, together with what I have already given him; To son Timothy ten pounds out of my personal estate, together with what I have already given him. To the heirs of my deceased son Henry Scovell. Henry and Mary, four pounds out of my personal estate; To my son Stephen Scovell all my lands and buildings thereon standing, reserving his mother's use of the same; also my iron crowbar and a draft chain. To my children Samuel, Timothy, Stephen, Rebecca, Elizabeth and my grandchildren Henry and Mary seven shillings lawful money, to be equally divided between them. Son Timothy and daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth to be residuary legatees. Son Stephen to be executor.
