Stephen Farrell was born on 21st February 1883 in Dublin, son of Margaret Farrell, formerly Reid, and her husband Richard Farrell, a tailor. He was baptised when a couple of weeks old at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, when the family's abode was given as 10 Abbey Street.

Stephen's mother died in 1894, when he was 11 years old. The 1901 census finds Stephen living with several of his siblings in a household headed by his eldest sister, Julia. At this time, Stephen was working as a porter. Stephen has yet to be traced after the 1901 census.
