Not long before October 5, 1796 Matthew Sims of Surry County, North Carolina felt that death was overtaking him and made a verbal will bequeathing his estate to his wife, Mary. This act and the words spoken by Matthew Sims was witnessed and heard by Dennis Laffoon, his wife Elizabeth Laffoon, and Margaret Evans. On October 5, 1796 all three of them appeared before the Clerk of The Court and certified the will of Matthew Sims by having their names recorded and making their mark. This is recorded in the Surry County Will Book on page 250.

In November 1796 Dennis Laffoon and Elizabeth Laffoon appeared at the Surry County Court and made oath that they had heard Matthew Sims declare his will and desire and that the witness, Margaret Evans was there when the words were uttered, The names of Dennis Laffoon and Elizabeth Laffoon are recorded. This is in the Surry County Will Book, page 251.
