Spier Jackson helped start an oil development company by the name of Devils Den. William Suerstedt owned chares in this company in 1985.

    Spier Jackson, one of the business men of Visalia, was born in Sartoga, New York, April 10, 1843.  His father Chester, was born and reared in the same city.  He was of Scotch-Irish ancestry.  His mother Jerusha Tyler, was born in New York.  They had only one child, the subject of this notice.  The father was a soldier in the war of 1812 - 1815.
    Spier Jackson was raised in Saratoga, from thence emigrated to Illinois and in 1861 crossed the plains to California and settled in Columbia, Tuolumne County.  Mr. Jackson did his first work for wages in a flouring mill.  He mined in that County and also worked at saw-milling and in the lumber business.  In 1873 he came to Visalia and began the business of painting, which he has followed since.  He has several investments in lands and owns some ranches obtained from the Government and from the railroad, and also owns several lots and residences in the city of Visalia.  For five years he was a member of the firm of Spier & Jackson, and after this the firm of Kimball & Jackson was formed, in which he still continues.  They have done much of the business in their line in the county.
    In the fall of 1870 he was married to Miss Fanny Jones, a native of New York.  She came to California with her parents when she was three years of age.  They have one child, who they have named Florence.
    Mr. Jacson is in politics a Republican and is a member of all the branches of the I. O. O. F.

Spier Jackson died March 11, 1919 - - probate docket No. 25654 Alameda County, California His will was not recognized by the court on grounds it was "not entirely written, dated and signed in the handwriting of said Spier Jackson - - -"

    Fanny Jackson was appointed administrix, posting bond of $10,000.  The estate included properties in Oakland, Berkeley, Visalia and Lindsay.  Records are lengthy, including separate documents for every time she sold some of the property.
    Fanny's petition for Letters of Administration (March 18, 1919) name the following as "heirs at law of said decedent":

    She to remember later our adopted daughters, Ruth and Rema when she makes her will.  I allso will to C. A. Spier, my nephew, all my shares in the Evens Dale Orchard Co. as it stands.  Allso the property on No. 27 Ave. Visalia.  Any property not mentioned here will go to Mrs. Jackson.  She to remember our Ruth and Rema and I here by sign my name.

Spier Jackson Is Called By Death

    Spier Jackson, for many years a resident of Visalia but of late years of Oakland, passed away at his home there at 9:30 Tuesday evening.  Mr. Jackson has been in poor health for some time but death came unexpectedly.  He was 74 years of age at the time of his death.
    Mr. Jackson was a native of New York state and later moved to Peoria, Illinois with his parents.  He came to California when he was 19 years of age and located at Toulumne county.  He resided there until 1872, when he came to Visalia to make his home.  He was engaged in the painting business while in this city being associated with the late Joseph Spier and later Frank Kimball.
    The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Fannie Jackson and other relatives in the state.  Charles Spier of this city is a nephew of Mr. Jackson's.
    The remains will be cremated in Oakland Friday, according to advices received here last evening.  Mr. and Mrs. Charles Spier, of Visalia, leave this morning for Oakland.
