In Carbondale, Ill., Jan. 6th, 1881, Mrs. Sophia Saunders, in the 81st year of her age. She was born in Brookfield, Madison Co., N. Y., May 28th, 1800. She made a profession of religion in early life, and united with the First Seventh-day Baptist Church in Brookfield, of which she remained a member until her death. In 1866, she removed with her husband, the late William B. Saunders, to Carbondale, Ill., to reside with their son-in-law and youngest daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hewitt, where they both spent the remainder of their days. Mr. Saunders died about ten years before his wife. Sister Saunders seemed to enjoy a good degree of health for one so far advanced in life until a little more than a year previous to her death, when she began to fail rapidly under the effect of the infirmities of age. She suffered much from rheumatism, accompanied by a severe cough, which at times was very distressing. She bore her suffering, however, with most exemplary patience and resignation to the divine will. She expressed great satisfaction in the kind care taken of her, thanking the Lord for giving her such kind ones to care for her in her helpless life. She was much beloved by those who knew her, and died as she had lived - trusting in Jesus. "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God." The funeral services were conducted in the house of her son-in-law, by Eld W. J. Place, pastor of the Baptist Church. Sister Saunders was the only surviving sister of Dea. Witter of Nile, N. Y.
