He then worked on his fathers farm except one year when he was clerking in a store at Stavanger, until he came to America in July, 1856 (on the same boat as his wife) and settled in Miller township, LaSalle county (1 mile west and 1/2 mile south of Nettle Creek). Served 6 years as trustee for the Fox River Church at Norway and 3 years as deacon. Owned a farm of 160 acres. His first name is sometimes shown as "Sjoval" or "Sjovot" and his last as "Rasmussen", also listed as "Rasmussen Runnestad" in "The Fox Valley Norwegian-American Sesquitennial 1925-1975" with a note that he dropped the Runnestad when he came to America. His 50th wedding anniversary was held at his house on 18 Sept 1906. References
