Simon enlisted into the Civil War from Forestville, New York, on August 12, 1861, for the Union in Company I Unit 49th New York Infantry, was mustered out on June 3, 1862, with typhoid fever.

Moved to Fulton County, Ohio where his brother Nathan and his father Adam H. and family lived. He married and had three children.
