Liestøl came to the conclusion (presumably because there were no viable alternatives) that she was the youngest daughter of Sven Nilsson Tjaldal and Kari Jonsdatter, in spite of the fact that their oldest daughter was also named Sigrid[1]. Apparently it was not uncommon for two living children in the same family to have the same name because of the naming conventions of the time, in which the oldest children in a family were named after their grandparents and the younger after their great-grandparents[4]. Presumably the children had nicknames to differentiate them. Note that the older Sigrid's husband was still alive when the younger Sigrid was having children, so these could not be the same woman.

'These conventions [naming children after grandparents and great-grandparents] lead to instances where 2 or more living children in the same family could have the same first name. For example, if both Kristoffer and Kari had fathers named Ole, it was likely that they would have 2 children named Ole. There is one instance in Årdal with 4 living Oles in the same family.'
