Sherman Loar "Pat" Cale enlisted in the Navy in 1936, retiring after 22 years as Lieutenant Commander. He served two years in China during the Chinese/Japanese War and was there at the time the Japanese sank the United States riverboat The USS Panay on the Yangtze River. He was assigned to a ship at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941. The ship was ordered at once to Australia, where it operated with the Australlian Navy in the South Pacific. It was finally sunk during an enemy air attack in January 1943 near Guadalcanal. During his career, he served as commanding officer of four different ships. After retiring from the Navy in 1958, he served with Boy Scouts of America in Norfolk, VA. He then returned to Morgantown and was associated with the West VIrginia University Physical Plant association for 15 years. He was involved with the Arts in Morgantown for several years and served on the original Board of Directors of the Monongalia Arts Center. (Obituary, Dominion Post)
