Facts and Events
[edit] NarrativeSharp was a very bright - 'sharp' - and capable person, and though he had to leave school at 12, he continued his education at the Mechanics' Institute in the evenings, while working at his father's cabinetmaker's business in the daytime. In 1874, having completed his cabinet-making apprenticeship, he began his cotton career by going to work for his grandfather at B. Thornber and Sons. In 1880, Sharp formed his own company with a neighbour and friend, James Foulds, and they worked Healey Wood Shed where Sharp had been in training since 1874 - meanwhile B. Thornber and Sons had moved on to Daneshouse Shed. Sharp and Florence met at their mutual church: Salem Congregational Chapel. In 1907, Sharp's manufacturing moved into his newly built shed: Park Shed, and James Foulds began his separate business in the other half of the same, fine new building. Sharp was involved with everything in Burnley, including Council politics. He was a Liberal Councillor and Alderman for many years, with a keen and fruitful interest in the development of the town's education facilities. He taught at the Mechanics' and at Salem Chapel.
