Shadrackand Susan Reed Dial were the parents of Elizabeth, Shadrack, Joshua,Enoch and Caliaph. Shadrack and Nancy Horney Dial were the parentsof: David, Joseph, James, Phoebe, Deborah, Mary, Martha, Rebecca andEllen. Cephas Atkinson worked for Shadrack Dial making bricks.Shadrack Dial died around 1842 and was buried in Ohio.

From the Book "Martin Dial and Related Families", published in 1959 byHastings Harrison Shadrack Dial, a son of Robert Dial:

Shadrak Dial was born in 1756, in Pennsylvania, and died after 1840 inClermont County, Ohio. He married first Nancy Horney, who was bornAugust 5, 1764, and died July 5, 1802. He married second, SusannahReed, who was born January 7, 1776, in North Carolina, and died July14, 1857, Batavia, Clermont County, Ohio, near Cincinnati, Ohio. Shewas the daughter of Col. James Reed, of North Carolina. Mrs. EffieSilver Johnson of Cinncinnati, Ohio, is said to be a member of D.A.R.on the service of Col. James Reed. Tradition quite generally accepted is that Shadrach Dial was a son ofRobert Dial, an immigrant to the colonies from Wales. Some presentday descendants of Robert Dial, through his son, Joseph Dial, a brother of Shadrach Dial, claim thathe was a grandson of a John or a John Robert Dial and that he was agrandson of Isaac Malcolm and Harriett (Blackwell) Dyal, ofOxfordshire, England. Others say, that Shadrach Dial was a son ofRobert Dial, a grandson of Edward Dial of Wales, and a great-grandsonof John Dial who was a son of James and Susannah (Hatfield) Dyall ofGlasgow, Scotland. All that I can say is that we know from the willof Robert Dial, dated December 27, 1793, Rowan County, North Carolina, that Shadrach Dial, Joseph Dial, and their brothers and sisters, wereRobert Dial's children. Since I have no documentation of the ancestryof Robert Dial, as I have said elsewhere, I am sure that the lines ofmy Revolutionary War ancestor, Martin Dial and Shadrach Dial joinedeither in Isaac Malcolm Dyall of Oxfordshire, or in his father, JamesDyall of Glasgow.

Shadrach Dial and Nancy Horney had the following children: John,Deborah, Mary, Eleanor, Lydia, Martha, Elizabeth, David, Phoebe,Moses, Joseph, Rebecca, Shadrach and Philip Dial.

Shadrach Dial and his second wife, Susannah Reed, had the followingchildren: James, Elizabeth, Caleb, Joshua, Mary, Shadrach, Enoch,George and Samuel Dial. Shadrach was the father of twenty-twochildren from the first one born in 1783 to the last one born in 1825.

Comments by George W. Dial, in his old records, concerning ShadrachDial, within the book by Hastings Harrison: "On December 30, 1805,Shadrach Dial and Susannah, his second wife, conveyed to_________Tomlinson, late of Guilford County, N.C., a tract onDutchman's Creek, 132 acres, Rowan County, now Davis County, for aconsideration of 399 pounds. Shadrach married in Delaware, went withRobert Dial, father and brothers, according to tradition, to N.C. Helived for a time in South Carolina with the father and brothers, thence back to Delaware and then to N.C. "He moved to Ohio in 1804,accompanied by his second wife, his children, and also a half-brother,John Campbell Dial, 18 who was bound to Shadrach until he (John)became of age. A dispute arose between the two half-brothers inregard to the time when John would become of age. John ran off, taking a horse and a sack of meal and eventually making his way backto N.C. where he made claim to and secured the old family plantationwhich had been more or less abandoned. From N.C. he went away to thewar of 1812. "John then returned to the Ohio home near Olive Branch, and secured from his half-brother Shadrach, his share of the familyland which had been promised him. Hard feelings developed over thesetwo family matters, one in North Carolina and one in Ohio. Thesefeelings were kept alive in part by the fact that Shadrach's peoplewere strongly religious and opposed to liquor and slavery, whileJohn's people enjoyed their liquor and the dance."

Excerpts from the Will of Shadrach Dial: It was written in Clermont County, Ohio, on September 12, 1842. Itwas recorded in docket A.P. 136 of the probate Court of ClermontCounty. In his Will, he mentioned 14 children, including heirs ofsome of them who preceeded him. The Bible record showed that his 8other children died without issue, some in infancy, which accounts forall of his twenty-two children, by his first wife Nancy Horney and hissecond wife Susannah Reed.

February 1994, from Ruther Barker Morgan:

"On January 11, 1782, Shadrach Dial, aged 23, was married to NancyHorney, aged 18, in Carolina County, Maryland. Shadrach was a veryprolific father and he and Nancy had 14 children during the 20 yearsof their marriage. Nancy Horney Dial died after the birth of PhilipDial, when the family was still living in North Carolina. Shadrachneeded help to care for all of these children, so on March 18, 1803,he married Susannah Reed, daughter of Col. James Reed of NorthCarolina. Following his second marriage Shadrach sold his 133 acreson Dutchman's Creek, which he had farmed for eight years. to JohnTomlinson. He received 399 pounds for the sale which enabled him tofinance his move to Ohio, where he appeared on the Clermont County TaxList in 1810.

Shadrach and his second wife, Susannah, had six more children aftermoving to Ohio. Shadrach was 66 years of age when his 22nd child wasborn and he continued the good life for another 17 more years."

An article in the Ohio Sun had the following obituary: ""Died in this township (Clermont County) on Monday evening last, Mr.Shadrach Dial, in the 85th year of his age. Mr. Dial emigrated to thecounty at an early day, and was one of the first settlers in thisregion. He lived, for about 60 years, as he died, an exemplary memberof the Merodise (?) Episcopal Church, and lived to see his childrenwell situated in life, and members of his own church."
