Sarah Ann Tye was born on 18th February 1830 and baptised ten days later at Stow in Lincolnshire, daughter of a miller called Anthony Tye and his wife Margaret. When Sarah was still very small the family left Stow and moved about 35 miles west to Woodhouse Mill in the parish of Handsworth, Yorkshire, just east of Sheffield. Sarah was baptised for a second time there when she was two years old on the same day that a younger brother was baptised.
The 1841 census finds Sarah living with her parents and siblings at "Engine Houses" in Woodhouse Mill. By 1851 Sarah had left home and was working as a house servant at a boarding school in Sheffield.
On 23rd May 1858, aged 28, Sarah was married in Sheffield to George Bonser, a shoe maker. They went on to have a daughter in 1859 and a son in 1861. The 1861 census finds the family living at 30 Bank Street in Sheffield.
George has yet to be traced after 1861. The 1871 census finds Sarah and the two children living with her parents and two brothers at 5 Walker Lane in Sheffield. She described herself as married, but George has not been found in that census. She was working as a seamstress at that time. In each census from 1881 onwards Sarah described herself as a widow, although no obvious death for George has been found.
In both 1881 and 1891, Sarah was living at 18 Norfolk Row in Sheffield and working as a caretaker of offices. Her widowed father was living with her in 1881, whilst in 1891 her widowed daughter and grandchildren were living with her.
In 1901 Sarah was living at 25 Aston Street in Sheffield with her daughter and grandchildren. She died in Sheffield on 27th September 1906, aged 76.
