Delaware County's Oldest Woman Dead. Mrs. Sarah Hoover Aged 95 Years Died in Riverside Wednesday Morning.

Mrs. Sarah Hoover 95, Delaware County's oldest resident, died at 4 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter Mrs. W. H. Snyder in Riverside. Many of Mrs. Hoover's relatives claim that she was Indiana's oldest resident and this fact has never been verified. She was born in Western Pennsylvania in 1805. After her marriage to John Hoover she came to Ohio and later to Indiana. In 1846, 54 years ago Mr. and Mrs Hoover came to Delaware County and purchased a fine farm near Mt. Tabor. Here they lived continuously until Mr. Hoover's death, ten years ago. Mrs. Hoover resided on the farm until several years ago when she went to live with her son Clark Hoover of Alexandria. For the past year she has resided with her daughter. Mrs. Hoover was probably the oldest Methodist in the United States at the time of her death. When but a mere child she affiliated herself with the denomination and was an active worker until less than a year ago. She was well known for her many acts of charity and kindness. Mrs. Hoover possessed wonderful vitality and with a few weeks before her death she assisted her daughter in many of her house hold duties. Mrs. Hoover is survived by two children. Mrs. W. H. Hoover and Clark Hoover. She is the last surviving member of a large family of children, who were noted for their longevity. The funeral services will be held Friday in Mt. Tabor Church of which the deceased was a prominant member. The cortege will leave the residence at 12 o'clock and proceed at once to the church.
Interment will be made in the Mt. Tabor cemetery

...John Hoover, the father of our subject. grew to manhood amid the wild scenes of Wayne County, Ind., during its early settlement, receiving a very limited education. When reaching manhood he contracted matrimonial ties with Miss Esther Zook, and they settled in the same neighborhood, following agricultural pursuits. Of this marriage four children were born, the first dying in infancy. The second, Dr. Jonas Hoover, is a practicing physician of Bennet, Neb.; Abraham L., our subject, was the third, and Esther, Mrs. West, who is the mother of a large family, is now living on a farm in Gruenwood County, Kan. The mother passed away when her son Abraham L. was but two years old. He, with the other children, was then given to the care of Grandmother Zook, where they remained for two or three years, until their father married for his second wife Miss Sarah Knotts. They settled on his father's farm, taking the two boys and leaving the daughter with her grandmother, who had cared for her from the time of her birth.
Dr. Hoover says this is about the earliest recollection he has of himself or his family. A little later on, about 1846, John Hoover with his family changed his residence to Liberty Township, Delaware Co., Ind.,. five miles east of Muncie, the county seat. Two children were born of his second marriage: Jerusha, now the wife of Henry Schneider and the mother of a large family, their home being on a farm northwest of Muncie, and James C., who married Miss Clara Whitney, but still resides at the old homestead. To them were born two children, the elder of whom is deceased. ...
