[Footnote: "It is evident that this is a mistake, for "Dorchester in New England" was not settled till six years after the date of Mrs. Whipple's birth. The stones do not appear to be very ancient and may have been erected fifty years or more after the decease of Capt. Whipple and his wife."]

He married his wife, Sarah, at Dorchester, about the year 1639-40. His wife was born at Dorchester, about the year 1624, and died at Providence town, 1666; aged about 42 years. She could not have been over sixteen years of age when married. What her name was beside Sarah, we have no knowledge. Mr. Whipple and his wife, united with a church at Dorchester, in 1641.

"Sarah - Sarah Whipple's maiden name: Previous antiquarian researches claim that Sarah's maiden name, among others, could have been: Hutchinson, Darling or They. Regrettably, none of these writers provided requisite proof for their assertions. Sarah's birthplace and date of birth are likewise unknown [although estimates have been based on her tombstone inscription "she was born in Dorchester, in New England (sic) & died in Providence Anno Dona(?) 1666 Aged About 42 years"]."
