Notes on Parents of Sarah "Sally" Couch

  • Father = John Couch
    • Source: Dickey's Interview (1898) with Ira "Si" Couch 1. Although Ira did not explicitly state that Sarah Couch was the daughter of John Couch, it can be reasonably deduced from the relationships mentioned.
  • Mother - Mary Boone
    • Source: No direct source. Relationship calculated.

Notes on POSSIBLE connection to the famous Daniel Boone

  • Supposedly Sarah/Sally Couch is related to the famous Daniel Boone through her mother (Mary Boone). Proof needed.

    • Source: Find A Grave. No sources provided. Needs stronger proof.
  • Place = New River (on Holston)
    • Source: Dickey's Interview (1898) with Ira "Si" Couch 1. Although Ira did not explicitly state that Sarah was born in New River, he did state that her brother Martin was, so it is reasonable to deduce that Sarah was born there as well.
  • Middle name = Phoebe
    • Source: The middle name of "Phoebe" appears to be family tradition - needs proof. Sarah's secondary headstone reads, "Sarah P. Couch Lewis", but this stone was added later, so it is not sufficient proof.

  • cos1776 NOTE: There is something amiss here. Although Find A Grave states that the headstone is incorrect, there is a James Lewis who lives in the household of Polly Bolling in the 1850 & 1860 census records for Perry county. Could the 1844 death date for Sarah be correct and James is a widow in the years after? Needs more research.
  • cos1776 NOTE: see story from ancestry 4 for possible leads - needs analysis and sourcing.

Notes on Burial of Sarah "Sally" Couch

  • There is a secondary headstone for Sarah installed in Old Ed Napier Farm, Perry county, Kentucky. It is not known if this is her actual burial location. Proof is needed.

James T. Lewis was a stonemason by trade. Born in Ashe County, North Carolina, he married Sarah Phoebe Couch in 1787. She was the daughter of Jonathan Couch, who was noted to have fought at the side of George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and Mary Boone, who was the sister of Daniel Boone, the famous American frontiersman. James lived here with his family until moving to Kentucky in 1810, living in Perry County, Kentucky. James and Sarah had 6 sons and 4 daughters. They lived in Kentucky until moving west before the Census was taken in 1840. William, son of James and Sarah, along with his wife and family are listed on the 1840 census for Platte County, Missouri. William's younger brother, Jesse H. Lewis also moved west to Platte County, Missouri. The Lewis's lived here until 1851. While living in Missouri their daughter Susan met and married Thomas Starns. In 1851 William and family and brother Jesse H took on the 130 day journey crossing the plains with ox drawn wagons to Oregon. William settled across the Long Tom Stream near Monroe Oregon and Jesse secured a donation claim of 320 acres 8 miles southeast of Silverton on Waldo Hills. He remained here until his death at the age of 80, developing his farm and doing stonemason work as needed. History records that Jesse and family are among those brave men and women who formed the advance guard of civilization and courageously faced the hardships and privations incident to the life on the frontier, leaving behind them all of the comforts to which they had become accustomed to establish homes for themselves and families in Western Oregon. In Silverton, Oregon Jesse H. Lewis celebrated with his wife, Mahalia Jane Dickson, their golden wedding anniversary on January 21st 1903. They later retired and moved to Johnson, Washington.
In 1876 William and Hannah's daughter and husband, Susan and Thomas Starns, and family arrived with their two wagons and 4 horses. It was a grand occasion.
Information contained in this story was extracted from pages copied from "GASTONS CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF OREGON" pages 530 and 533 at the Portland Public Library by Robert Edgar Starns and copied from grandmother Lewis' family bible which reads in part ". . . ..Grandma Lewis' maiden name was Snethen. Her mother's maiden name was Hannah Costo. Her mother's maiden name was Phebe and her mother's maiden name was Hannah Cline. That was as far as she knew. Grandpa Lewis' side mother's maiden name was Sarah Couch. Her mother's was Polly Boone, Daniel Boone;s sister. Thomas Starns (grandpa) side, his mother's name was Brunner. Her mother's name was Cline. His father's mother's name was Hart, coming from Holland". Acknowledgement: This information from Hiram and Herb Starns of Summerville, Oregon. It was written by their grandmother Lewis. This is a copy from a handwritten copy from the original in grandmother Lewis' bible 6/20/53.
